What Is a Jockstrap? How It Works, How to Wear One & Why Guys Love Them

If you've never worn a jockstrap before, you might associate them with locker rooms, athletes, and old-school sports uniforms.

That's where the jockstrap got its start, but men's jockstraps have come a long way since then.

Today, guys wear jockstraps for workouts, everyday comfort, support, style, and sometimes simply because they like how they look in one.

So what exactly is a jockstrap? How is it supposed to fit? What are those straps in the back actually doing? And do you need to be playing a sport to wear one?

Not at all.

Here's everything you should know about one of the most recognizable and unique styles of men's underwear.

What Is a Jockstrap?

A jockstrap is a style of men's underwear that combines a supportive front pouch with an open back.

Most jockstraps have three main components:

A waistband that sits around your waist or hips.

A front pouch that provides support and coverage.

Two elastic straps that extend from the bottom of the pouch, run underneath the buttocks, and connect back to the waistband.

Unlike briefs or boxer briefs, there is usually no fabric covering the buttocks.

That open construction is what gives the jockstrap its distinctive look and feel.

If you're still figuring out how jockstraps compare with other underwear cuts, our guide to men's underwear styles explains the differences between jockstraps, briefs, trunks, thongs, boxer briefs, and more.

Why Were Jockstraps Invented?

Jockstraps weren't originally created as fashion underwear.

They were designed to provide support during physical activity.

The basic idea makes sense. Keep everything secure in the front while eliminating unnecessary fabric in the back and around the legs.

That combination allowed for support and freedom of movement, which made the design particularly useful for sports and other physical activities.

Over time, though, guys realized there was no reason that design had to stay on the playing field.

The modern jockstrap has evolved into an entire category of men's underwear.

How Does a Jockstrap Work?

The pouch and elastic straps work together to keep the underwear secure against the body.

The waistband holds the jockstrap in position around your waist or hips, while the pouch provides front support.

The two straps travel underneath the buttocks and help keep the bottom of the pouch securely positioned.

Because there's no full back panel or fabric extending down the thighs, you get significantly less material than you would with briefs, trunks, or boxer briefs.

The result is underwear that can feel supportive in the front while remaining extremely open everywhere else.

What Are the Straps on a Jockstrap For?

Those two straps aren't just there for looks.

They help anchor the bottom of the pouch and keep the jockstrap securely positioned while you move.

A properly fitting jockstrap should have straps that sit underneath the buttocks rather than cutting directly across them.

They should feel secure but not painfully tight.

If the straps are constantly digging into your skin, the jockstrap may be too small or the particular cut might not work well for your body.

If they're hanging loosely or moving around, you may need a smaller size.

How Should a Jockstrap Fit?

Fit is one of the biggest factors in whether you'll actually enjoy wearing one.

A jockstrap should feel secure without feeling restrictive.

The waistband should sit comfortably against your body without digging deeply into your skin or constantly sliding down.

The pouch should hold everything comfortably without excessive compression.

The straps should sit underneath the buttocks and remain in place as you walk, sit, bend, and move.

Basically, you shouldn't spend the entire day adjusting it.

If you do, something probably isn't fitting correctly.

Always check the brand's size chart when buying a jockstrap, especially if you're trying one for the first time. Underwear sizing can vary between brands and even between different styles.

Are Jockstraps Comfortable?

They definitely can be.

For many guys, the appeal is actually how little fabric there is.

There are no legs to ride up like you might experience with boxer briefs. There isn't a full back panel. And a good pouch can provide support without requiring a lot of material.

Fabric makes a big difference too.

Modern jockstraps are available in cotton, nylon, polyamide, spandex blends, mesh, and other soft, stretchy materials.

A smooth fabric with plenty of stretch can make a jockstrap feel completely different from the traditional athletic versions you may be picturing.

If comfort is your priority, our Whisper Jockstrap is designed with a soft, silky fabric blend that provides stretch and support while keeping the minimal jockstrap construction.

Do You Have to Be an Athlete to Wear a Jockstrap?

No.

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about jockstraps.

While the style has athletic roots, modern jockstraps aren't limited to sports.

You can wear one to the gym.

You can wear one underneath jeans.

You can wear one to work.

You can wear one around the house.

You can wear one on a night out.

Or you can wear one simply because you like the way you look in it.

Underwear doesn't need to have a complicated purpose.

Sometimes you just want something comfortable that makes you feel good.

Can You Wear a Jockstrap as Everyday Underwear?

Absolutely.

A jockstrap can be worn the same way you would wear briefs, boxer briefs, trunks, or a thong.

For everyday wear, we'd recommend choosing one made from a soft, flexible fabric rather than a heavy athletic material.

You also want to make sure the pouch provides enough room for your body.

Once you find the right fit, there's nothing stopping a jockstrap from becoming part of your normal underwear rotation.

How Do You Wear a Jockstrap?

Putting on a jockstrap is pretty straightforward.

Step into the waistband like you would with regular underwear.

Make sure each leg goes between the waistband and one of the two back straps.

Pull the jockstrap up and position the pouch comfortably in the front.

The waistband should sit securely around your waist or hips, depending on the rise of the design.

The two straps should sit underneath your buttocks.

Once everything is positioned correctly, move around a little.

Walk. Sit. Bend down.

If the pouch stays secure and the straps remain comfortably in position, you're probably good to go.

What Do You Wear Over a Jockstrap?

Pretty much whatever you want.

Jockstraps can be worn underneath jeans, shorts, sweatpants, dress pants, workout clothing, and most other everyday clothes.

Because there is so little fabric in the back, they can also reduce some of the bunching you might experience with boxer briefs.

Just keep in mind that different pants fit differently. Very thin or extremely fitted clothing may reveal the outline of the waistband or straps depending on the jockstrap you're wearing.

Jockstrap vs. Thong: What's the Difference?

Jockstraps and men's thongs are both minimal underwear styles, but they feel very different.

A thong usually has a narrow piece of fabric running between the buttocks.

A jockstrap leaves the center of the back completely open and instead uses two elastic straps underneath the buttocks.

Both styles typically have a supportive pouch in the front.

Which one is more comfortable comes down largely to personal preference.

Some guys prefer the barely-there feeling of a thong. Others prefer having nothing running through the center of the back and choose a jockstrap instead.

And plenty of guys wear both.

If you're curious about thongs too, our guide to wearing a men's thong for the first time covers fit, comfort, fabrics, and what to expect.

Are Jockstraps Only for Working Out?

Definitely not.

Today's jockstraps can be athletic, practical, fashionable, sexy, or some combination of all four.

The fabrics have changed. The fits have changed. The colors have changed.

You can find classic black and white designs, bold colors, prints, low-rise cuts, softer everyday styles, and plenty of options that look nothing like traditional athletic underwear.

That versatility is a big part of why the jockstrap has stuck around.

Why Do Guys Like Wearing Jockstraps?

Ask ten guys and you might get ten different answers.

Some like the support.

Some like the airflow.

Some don't want fabric covering their thighs.

Some like wearing them underneath workout clothes.

And yes, some guys simply think they look sexy in one.

That's a perfectly valid reason too.

Underwear is one of the few pieces of clothing that can be practical and personal at the same time.

Nobody else even needs to know what you're wearing.

If putting on a jockstrap makes you stand a little taller or feel a little more confident, that's reason enough.

Are Jockstraps Good for Hot Weather?

They can be a great option when you want less fabric against your body.

A traditional boxer brief covers the front, back, hips, and part of the thighs.

A jockstrap removes most of that material.

That doesn't automatically mean every jockstrap will feel cool, since fabric and clothing worn over it also matter, but the open-back construction provides considerably less coverage.

Look for lightweight, breathable fabrics if staying cool is one of your priorities.

What Should You Look for When Buying Your First Jockstrap?

If you're trying a jockstrap for the first time, focus on fit, pouch comfort, fabric, and waistband quality.

Don't choose something simply because it looks good in a picture.

A good jockstrap should look good and feel good.

Look for a waistband with enough elasticity to stay securely in place without digging into your skin.

Choose a pouch with enough room and stretch for your body.

Pay attention to the straps too. You want them to stay in position without feeling overly tight.

And choose a fabric you'll actually want against your skin for hours at a time.

Do You Need a Certain Body Type to Wear a Jockstrap?

No.

Just like thongs, jockstraps aren't reserved for models, athletes, or guys with a certain body type.

You don't need perfect abs.

You don't need huge legs.

You don't need a certain size butt.

And you definitely don't need anyone else's permission.

The right jockstrap is the one that fits your body comfortably and makes you feel good wearing it.

That's it.

Should You Try a Jockstrap?

If you've been curious about them, yes.

Trying a different underwear style is a pretty low-risk way to step outside your usual routine.

Maybe you'll decide you still prefer briefs.

Maybe you'll only wear a jockstrap to the gym.

Or maybe you'll put one on and wonder why you've been covering yourself in boxer briefs all these years.

That's part of the fun of trying something different.

At Oh Bobby Behave, we believe comfort and confidence should go together. Your underwear can support you, feel great, and still have a little personality.

A jockstrap checks all three boxes.
